What Is a Pelvic Ultrasound and What Does It Measure?

Pelvic ultrasound, also known as pelvic sonography or pelvic scan, uses a transducer that sends out sound waves at specific frequencies in order to generate an image of a woman’s organs within the pelvis. These images allow for quick visualization of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina, bladder, and fallopian tubes. Pelvic ultrasound can be used to:
Examine the structure of a patient’s uterus or ovaries
Search for signs of cancer on the reproductive organs
Locate an intrauterine device (IUD)
Look for benign growths like cysts
Diagnose the cause of abdominal pain
Evaluate potential fertility problems
Monitor a baby’s growth during pregnancy
Diagnose a potential ectopic pregnancy

How Does Pelvic Ultrasounds Work?

During your pelvic scan, one of our skilled staff members will use a transducer that emits ultrasound waves at an inaudible frequency. A special ultrasound gel is placed over the skin before the ultrasound transducer is placed on the skin. The device sends waves that move through the body and its internal structures and organs. Sound waves bounce off structures within the pelvis (much like an echo) before returning to the imaging device. Sound waves travel at varying speeds depending on the type of tissue the waves encounter. A computer within the transducer processes the information before converting it into a visual image in real-time.
Important information, such as whether a patient’s fallopian tubes are open or blocked, can be gathered without having to use invasive or radiation-emitting forms of imaging.

Why Are Pelvic Ultrasounds an Important Part of Fertility Treatments?

During infertility testing at our offices, serving Glendale and the San Fernando Valley, the scans can provide valuable insight into a patient’s ovaries, endometrial lining, and uterus. Important information, such as whether a patient’s fallopian tubes are open or blocked, can be gathered without having to use invasive or radiation-emitting forms of imaging. Our staff may use specialized ultrasound that can evaluate ovarian reserves. During fertility treatment, pelvic ultrasound is often used to monitor follicle development within the ovaries. IVF treatments use ultrasound for egg retrieval. Ultrasound technology can also guide embryo transfer during later stages of IVF.
