One of the reasons that Pacific Fertility Center is a leader in Los Angeles fertility treatment is our focus on our patients and their needs. We take additional time to answer questions and address concerns, which ensures that patients know their options and make empowered choices.

While in vitro fetilization (IVF) remains one of our most popular and effective options for addressing infertility, a number of patients have also achieved success thanks to intrauterine insemination (IUI). Let’s take a moment to consider who is an ideal candidate for IUI.

What Is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

IUI is a type of artificial insemination that is performed to address various kinds of infertility. During the procedure, a catheter is used to bypass the cervix and introduce sperm into the uterus. This assists the sperm in its journey to the fallopian tubes where a viable egg can be fertilized.

General Candidates for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Good candidates for IUI are people who have had trouble conceiving a child through natural means. They should be in good overall health and not suffer from medical problems that adversely affect overall wellness.

Assessing Ovarian Reserve

In determining candidacy for IUI, it’s important that we examine a woman’s ovarian reserve. This essentially determined whether or not a woman has a healthy number of viable eggs present that will allow her to become pregnant. A healthy ovarian reserve means that IUI might be ideal.

Performing Semen Analysis

Another important part of assessing IUI candidacy is semen analysis. This will check a man’s semen for sperm density and sperm quality. If a man produces healthy sperm at a regular sperm count, IUI should help increase the chances of successful conception.

Considering Additional Procedures to Improve Success

When IUI is performed, it’s common for fertility drugs to be used to ensure perfect timing and conditions. A man’s sperm tends to be washed in a special process in order to ensure optimal chances of successful pregnancy.

Cases in Which Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Is Not Ideal

While IUI is helpful for a number of patients, there are certain situations in which it is not an ideal treatment option. This include the following cases:

  • Severe endometriosis
  • Severe male factor infertility
  • Disease affecting the fallopian tubes
  • Medical history of pelvic adhesions

In addition, people who have had not achieved success with IUI after multiple IUI attempts in the past will have other treatments recommended to them.

Alternatives to Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

If IUI is not an ideal option for treatment, there are plenty of alternatives or variations to consider. For issues with male factor infertility, for example, a sperm donor can be used for the IUI process. For issues with female factor infertility, an egg donor may be considered. IVF is also a good alternative to consider depending on the circumstances that patients face.
