Nobody likes hidden costs, and we want to provide you with as much transparency into the IVF process as possible. Often asked “How much does IVF cost in California?”, we've gathered some important numbers surrounding treatment pricing for IVF.
Let’s dive into everything you need to know about what you can expect to pay for your newest family member, and additional pricing factors to consider.
On average, the cost to have IVF treatment done in California across major cities ranges between $8,000 to $13,000 for one IVF cycle without the medication. California state requires insurance companies to have some form of coverage for intended parents looking to take part in infertility treatment. However, California doesn’t extend this law to IVF treatments.
At a minimum, intended parents will have to cover the cost of the IVF treatment cycle. This includes the cost of ultrasounds, blood tests, egg retrieval, lab fees, embryo transfer, cryopreservation of viable embryos, and one year of embryo storage fees.
However, for intended parents using third-party IVF treatments, your costs will be significantly higher and can range from $14,000 to $46,000. Depending on whether or not you’re using a surrogate and egg donor, you can participate in the “Unlimited IVF until live birth” package. This ensures that you’ll walk home with a new family member, regardless of how many egg retrievals, embryo transfers, and ultrasounds you may require.

Depending on if you’re using conventional IVF with your own eggs and sperm, or if you’re using an egg donor, your egg retrieval costs during IVF will vary. However, most IVF clinics do not explicitly offer just egg retrieval -- rather, you can purchase the service through a package that includes other necessary parts such as ultrasounds, fertilization, or more.
Depending on the next steps after the procedure, an intended parent undergoing the egg retrieval procedure herself can expect to pay anywhere from $7,000 to $22,000. This range may be lower with insurance coverage. Your fertility clinic may offer different pricing packages by volume of services purchased, so talk to your fertility doctor and financial coordinator about what packages are best for you.
At PFCLA, you can access one, two, or three cycles, with pricing discounts offered when you choose more than one cycle up front. You can also decide if you’d like to freeze your eggs after the retrieval or fertilize the eggs and freeze the embryos for a later time.
If you’re using an egg donor for your fertility journey, her egg retrieval will be more expensive due to the additional coordination, testing, and treatment required. Aside from the base egg donor compensation package (around $8,000 in California), you can purchase IVF plans with one egg retrieval, multiple egg retrievals, unlimited transfers, or unlimited egg retrievals until live birth. The cost of these programs ranges from $25,000 to $46,000, and these prices are significantly discounted as patients purchase additional cycles and transfers.
However, remember that daily is priceless - and so is peace of mind - so when you’re undergoing egg retrievals for your IVF cycle, make sure you’re picking the financial package that will best align with your unique goals and desires.
The cost of fertility medications is not typically included in your IVF cycle payments, unless working with an egg donor and/or surrogate, and you may need to purchase those with or without insurance coverage. Patients typically spend around $4,000 to $6,000 on fertility medication, and these may be covered by insurance.
Depending on the amount of medication required, these medications can increase the cost of treatment. At Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles, we offer three types of IVF, all of which need different medication amounts.
With our natural IVF services, intended parents don’t use any fertility medications during IVF treatment. This makes natural IVF the most affordable option. However, this treatment isn’t always the right option for all intended parents.
Mini IVF requires some use of fertility medications. Mini IVF is the more moderately priced option compared to conventional IVF but comes with associated risks and complications.
Finally, traditional IVF uses higher amounts of medication to encourage the production of more eggs and give you the best chance of getting pregnant. However, the cost of medicines is higher for intended parents that undergo conventional IVF than mini or natural IVF.
At PFCLA, you can expect to pay anywhere from $7,000 to $22,000 to retrieve and freeze your eggs, with an additional $4,500 to $8,500 for the embryo transfer and other testing. The prices may be lower if you have insurance coverage. When using an in-house surrogate, a frozen embryo transfer is sometimes free of charge. Intended parents that undergo IVF often choose additional fertility services as well. Each of these services may be associated with an additional cost, depending on which package you use:
ICSI costs $1,500 per fertilization at PFCLA when it is not already included in a package. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected into the egg. This may be an ideal option in cases of male factor infertility.
Egg donors can add a substantial cost to your IVF treatment process. However, not all egg donors are vetted the same, and it’s important to ensure that you’re using a high-quality donor. Through our sister agency, Hatch, you can access the top 5% of egg donor candidates at a discounted rate if you use PFCLA’s in-house IVF program. PFCLA also offers a third-party IVF pricing plan with unlimited transfers and cycles, so you can feel confident that you’re paying a fixed price for unlimited treatments until you have a baby.
Surrogacy can also increase the costs of fertility services. In California, total surrogacy costs can range from $80,000 to $130,000. For intended parents considering surrogacy and IVF, you have a much wider price range due to the variable nature of agency fees, surrogate experience levels, and more. Through our sister agency, Hatch, you can access the top 5% of surrogate candidates across the country at a discounted rate if you use PFCLA’s in-house IVF program.
Through our unlimited cycles and unlimited transfers plans, your third-party fertility journey will stay at a fixed price with the clinic, no matter how many cycles or transfers are needed. Most other clinics do not include medications or PGS (preimplantation genetic screening, also known as PGT-A) in their plans.
At PFCLA, PGD costs $6,000 for up to eight embryos, with an additional $250/embryo. This testing method can screen embryos for specific genetic diseases and disorders before transferring the embryo to the uterus.
Similar to PGD, this testing method checks the overall number of chromosomes in your embryos to make sure they are at a normal and healthy number. Additionally, this technology allows parents to select the sex of their child. At PFCLA, PGS costs $5,000 for up to eight embryos when it is not already included in your package. This technology also allows intended parents to select the sex of the embryo implanted, so IPs can realize certain dreams of bringing a baby boy or girl into the world.
