Building Your Family through Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is an option in which the surrogate has no genetic relationship with the child she will carry. This allows parents to maintain a genetic relationship with the child, and can also minimize the risk of any legal disputes related to the treatment. Drs. Vicken SahakianMichele Evans, and Yvonne Yanqing Han in Los Angeles, CA, can help you determine if gestational surrogacy is the best way to help you grow your family.

Gestational surrogacy involves implanting a fertilized egg into a surrogate who has no genetic relationship to the child she will carry.

The Procedure

We can facilitate every step of growing your family through gestational surrogacy:

  1. Once you have determined that gestational surrogacy is the best option for you, you will need to select a gestational surrogate. We can help you coordinate with a reputable agency.
  2. The surrogate and intended mother (or egg donor, if one is needed) will then undergo a thorough examination.
  3. All parties will sign appropriate legal documentation.
  4. The intended mother or egg donor will need to take medication and develop multiple eggs to prepare for IVF. The surrogate will also be prescribed medications to prepare for the embryo transfer.
  5. Once the follicles are mature, the intended mother or donor will undergo the egg retrieval procedure.
  6. The eggs will be fertilized with the sperm of the intended father or sperm donor, and will develop in the lab.
  7. The embryo transfer will be performed about five days after egg retrieval.
  8. The surrogate will carry the baby to term and deliver the child.

Benefits of Gestational Surrogacy

There are many benefits of growing your family with the help of a gestational surrogate. Same-sex male couples or any intended parents who are unable to carry a child to term themselves can maintain a genetic relationship with the child.

Removing the biological tie of the surrogate can also simplify the legalities surrounding surrogacy. California is a "surrogacy-friendly" state. The Uniform Parentage Act that allows intended parents to establish parentage before birth, and offers protection of this status throughout the process.
