Laparoscopy is a conservative surgical procedure that enables doctors to view the reproductive organs and assess fertility. This procedure is an alternative to open surgery and can minimize pain, recovery time, and the risk of infection. At our offices around Los Angeles, CA, Dr. Vicken Sahakian , Dr. Michele Evans , and Dr. Yvonne Yanqing Han can perform laparoscopy to diagnose conditions such as endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease. We can also use a laparoscope during the treatment of ovarian cysts and tubal ligation.
Uses of Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is frequently used to diagnose the source of pelvic pain in the abdomen. It can also be used as a form of treatment for certain conditions. Laparoscopy is typically performed when noninvasive diagnostic methods, such as ultrasound or MRI, do not provide enough information for diagnosis. You may need to undergo a laparoscopy so your doctor can:
- Diagnose and treat chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or infertility
- Remove ovarian cysts, uterine polyps, or ectopic pregnancy
- Treat disorders such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or certain types of cancer
If your doctor does recommend a laparoscopy, they will provide you with specific instructions to follow prior to your procedure. Keep in mind that you will need a friend or loved one to drive you to and from your appointment.
