Learn More About IVF

IVF Cycle Overview

There are many steps involved in an IVF cycle, which begins at the start of a patient’s menstrual period. We provide detailed at-home instructions for patients to follow between appointments. The end goal is pregnancy, when patient care is transferred to the selected OB/GYN.

IVF Cycle Overview

IVF Testing

When the IVF cycle begins, we will order a number of pre-treatment tests. Some tests are mandated by state and federal law, while testing required by Pacific Fertility Center is customized to each patient. Tests often include blood tests, an ultrasound, and a semen analysis for the male partner.

IVF Testing

IVF Treatment

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an advanced method used to help infertile women and couples conceive. In our laboratory, we can fertilize eggs and sperm and implant the selected embryo in the mother's uterus. We can use your eggs or donor eggs depending upon your needs.

Ovarian Stimulation

Ovarian stimulation is an important part of the IVF process, increasing your chances of a successful pregnancy. We offer both oral and injectable fertility medications, in addition to hormones for optimal results. Patients work as a team with our experienced doctors and staff throughout the process.

IVF Monitoring

We carefully monitor our patients throughout the IVF cycle, offering home counsel and office visits for regular blood tests and ultrasounds. Our highly trained staff and technicians assist our physicians in providing cycle monitoring. For out-of-town patients, some procedures can be handled locally.

IVF Procedures

During IVF, our team can first retrieve the eggs from the patient, before fertilizing them with sperm in our laboratory. A few days later, we can perform an embryo transfer, introducing several embryos into the patient’s uterus. Additional techniques may be used to enhance the chances of pregnancy.

IVF Procedures

ICSI

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can optimize fertilization rates when a limited amount of quality sperm is available. A single sperm is injected directly into an egg, increasing the chance of conception. Our embryologists perform the procedure with precision, so as not to injure the egg.

ICSI

Assisted Hatching

Assisted hatching is a tool that can be used to improve IVF success. Most often recommended for women over the age of 37, this technique involves thinning or puncturing the outer shell of an embryo. This process makes it easier for the embryo to break out of its shell and attach to the uterine wall.

Assisted Hatching

Genetic Testing

Many of our patients choose to undergo genetic testing as part of their fertility treatment. These tests can be used to identify any chromosomal abnormalities or conditions that may be passed on. In some cases, genetic testing can be helpful in determining the cause of male or female infertility.

IVF Risks and Complications

While all medical procedures have some degree of risk, choosing a highly experienced doctor is the best way to decrease your chance of developing complications. Some IVF patients experience side effects from fertility medication or surgery, but serious complications are very rare.

IVF Risks and Complications

Frozen Embryo Transfer

If an initial IVF cycle is unsuccessful, reserved frozen embryos can be a cost-effective alternative to repeating the harvesting process. We offer several types of frozen transfer options, including natural, medicated, and partially medicated, customized to meet our patients' needs.

Natural IVF

For a number of reasons, some patients choose to pursue IVF while forgoing medication normally taken to stimulate egg production. The natural IVF process is essentially the same as the traditional treatment, but it is performed without ovulation stimulants.

Mini IVF

We offer mini IVF for patients who have medical or ideological opposition to IVF medications, or who have not had success with standard IVF. In comparison to traditional IVF, patients undergoing mini IVF take a reduced amount of medication, and we retrieve a smaller number of eggs.
