Definition of Infertility

We typically define infertility when there is the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse.

Infertility is very common. It is estimated that 15% of married couples suffer from infertility in the United States. This percentage is obviously an average. Couples in their late thirties or forties, will have a higher incidence of infertility than couples in their twenties. In this group, six months of trying without success should lead the patient to seek a physician's help.

Infertility can be attributed to the female or the male partner. In order to simplify the discussion, we will separate the causes of infertility into female and male. It is generally accepted that 60% of infertility is secondary to a female etiology.
